PPC for lawyers: your budget is buying clicks that will never be cases.
“Lincoln Lawyer” gets 307,000 US searches a month, and broad keywords put law firm ads in front of plenty of them. Connect your account with one Google sign-in and AdPilot’s AI takes it from there. It reads the account on its own, finds what you are actually paying for, and hands you each fix as a plain-English card. Tap approve, or skip it. No PPC knowledge needed and nothing to install.

Google Ads for lawyers is the most expensive place in advertising to waste money.
Everyone in legal marketing knows the clicks cost a fortune. Far fewer people check what those clicks were actually for. The trouble is the vocabulary. “Lawyer” and “attorney” are not only business words. They are also a TV genre, a job title, a video game, and a document people download for free.
One loosely scoped keyword sends your money to all of it at once. And because of what a click costs in this industry, a bad fortnight in a law firm account is not a rounding error.
AdPilot connects to your Google Ads account and reads it the way a careful consultant would. It looks for the searches you paid for that had nothing to do with your practice, the hours your ads run without producing a single call, the ad copy pulling clicks but no cases. Every finding arrives as a card written in plain English. You approve it or you skip it. Nothing reaches your account until you do.
And you stay in control the whole way:
- You approve every change. The AI proposes; you decide. Every budget, bid, keyword, or ad edit arrives as a plain-language card you approve or skip with one tap. Nothing is ever applied on its own.
- A snapshot before every change. AdPilot saves exactly how things looked before anything is touched, so you always have a clean “before.”
- One-click revert. Don’t like a change once it’s live? Undo it in a single click, straight back to that snapshot.
- A full audit log. Who, what, when, the old value and the new value, every change recorded. Nothing hidden.
- You keep the keys. You connect with one secure Google sign-in, and it only ever makes changes you approve. The account stays yours start to finish - you never transfer ownership, and you can disconnect anytime.
Where law firm PPC budgets actually leak
This is the part that rarely makes it into an agency deck. Below are real US search volumes from July 2026. Every line contains a word law firms bid on. Not one of them is a person with a case.
You can verify any row yourself in about a minute, which is rather the point. Advice about legal PPC tends to stay vague, and vague advice is hard to argue with.
| What people search | Searches/mo | Why it is not a client |
|---|---|---|
| lincoln lawyer | 307,000 | A Netflix legal drama |
| cast of the lincoln lawyer tv series | 149,000 | Same show. They want the cast list |
| the lincoln lawyer | 108,000 | Still the show |
| lincoln lawyer season 4 | 94,000 | Waiting on a release date |
| power of attorney | 89,000 | A document, not a lawyer |
| what is a power of attorney | 44,000 | Someone wants a definition |
| power of attorney form | 34,000 | Hunting for a free download |
| extraordinary attorney woo | 30,000 | A Korean television drama |
| ace attorney | 27,000 | A video game |
| lawyer salary | 21,000 | Career research |
| attorney vs lawyer | 19,000 | Another definition |

One thing to be careful with. Do not add “free” on its own as a broad negative. “Free consultation” is how a large share of good clients search in this industry, and blocking it will cost you cases. Use the longer phrases above and leave “free consultation” running.
PPC for attorneys: five things that matter more than your bids
- Count calls, not just form fills. Most legal clients pick up the phone rather than fill in a form. If your conversion tracking only counts submissions, Google is optimising toward the smaller half of your leads and quietly starving the better half.
- Split by practice area. A DUI defence and an estate plan are different businesses with different case values. One campaign covering both hands your budget to whichever draws more clicks, not whichever pays the bills.
- Treat geography as a real filter. You can only take cases where you are admitted to practise. Tightening location settings removes more waste from a legal account than any bid adjustment will.
- Read the search terms report weekly. That report is where the gap between the keyword you bought and the search you paid for becomes visible. In legal the gap is expensive, so weekly is not excessive.
- Bid on your own firm name. Competitors will. It is permitted and it is common. Brand terms are usually the cheapest clicks in the account, and losing your own name to a rival is an avoidable way to lose a case.
What a law firm PPC agency charges, and why the bill grows as you do.
Legal marketing agencies price above generalists, and most bill a monthly retainer plus a cut of your ad spend. Ten to twenty percent is the usual range. The harder you chase cases, the larger their share.
Illustrative example. Agencies vary, so check your own contract. Every number is shown so you can redo the math yourself.
You spend $5,000/month on ads
Legal PPC agency
$2,250/mo
$1,500 retainer + 15% of $5,000 ($750) - on top of the $5,000 Google already takes
AdPilot
$99/mo
Flat, whatever you spend
You spend $15,000/month on ads
Legal PPC agency
$3,750/mo
$1,500 retainer + 15% of $15,000 ($2,250) - you grew, so their invoice grew
AdPilot
$99/mo
Flat, whatever you spend
You spend $50,000/month on ads
Legal PPC agency
$7,500+/mo
15% alone is $7,500/mo, with the retainer still on top - and it climbs every time you scale
AdPilot
$99/mo
Flat, whatever you spend
At those rates the agency clears $27,000 in the first year and grows from there. AdPilot Growth is $1,188 a year and it does not move. Your ad budget should be buying cases.
PPC services for lawyers, shown as cards you approve one at a time.
What you actually pay a legal PPC agency for is the hands-on part. Building a campaign per practice area, digging through search terms for money leaks, tightening who sees the ads, writing copy that brings in cases rather than clicks. That is the work AdPilot’s AI does, and it explains every move in plain language.
Examples of what the cards look like - not results from your account
Builds your campaigns
Build a complete Search campaign for DUI defence: 3 ad groups, 40 keywords chosen for people looking to hire, and 8 ads. Structured and ready to go live the moment you approve.
Proposed change
What it’s doing: Building the whole campaign from scratch, structure, keywords and ads included, so you never start at a blank screen. It goes live only once you approve it.
Finds wasted spend
You paid for the search “lawyer salary” 41 times this month. Nobody searching that has a case. Add it as a negative keyword and the spending stops.
Proposed change
What it’s doing: Reading your search terms for money that never turns into a call or a case, then closing the leaks. (A “negative keyword” simply tells Google not to show your ad for that search.)
Tightens your targeting
Your ads run around the clock, but calls between midnight and 6am have been close to zero for weeks. Move that budget to the hours the phone actually rings.
Proposed change
What it’s doing: Matching your money to when and where the enquiries have really come from, including the states you are admitted to practise in.
Drafts better ads
This ad group is missing 4 of its possible headlines, so Google cannot test enough combinations. Here are 4 built around the practice area that converts best for you.
Proposed change
What it’s doing: Giving Google more headline combinations to work with, so it gets more out of the same budget.

Waste does not wait for the monthly report.
Agencies review on a schedule. Your budget does not.
On a monthly reporting cycle you find out in week five that week two went badly. The money has gone, and in legal that money is not small. AdPilot surfaces the problem while there is still budget left to save.
Catching a bad search term on Tuesday rather than the following month is the whole difference. One is steering. The other is reading the map after you have already arrived.
AdPilot vs a legal PPC agency
A straight comparison. No straw men.
What you pay
Legal agency: A retainer, usually with a percentage of ad spend on top. Legal specialists price above the generalist rate, and their cut rises as your caseload does.
AdPilot: One flat monthly price. It does not move when your ad spend does.
How fast a problem gets fixed
Legal agency: You raise it, it joins a queue, you hear back next week.
AdPilot: The account is read continuously. A leak becomes a card you can approve the same day.
Who holds the account
Legal agency: You hand over access. Changes happen and you read about them later.
AdPilot: You keep the keys. Every change waits for your one-tap approval, with a snapshot and one-click revert behind it.
Contract
Legal agency: Six or twelve month minimum terms are normal in legal marketing.
AdPilot: Month to month, cancel anytime. Free 7 days first, no card.
Conflicts of interest
Legal agency: Plenty of legal agencies take several firms in the same city and practice area. Your budget may be funding a competitor’s learning curve.
AdPilot: It is software. It works on your account only, and it has no other client in your city.
What you end up knowing
Legal agency: The account stays a black box, which is what keeps you dependent.
AdPilot: Every card explains its reasoning, so after a few weeks you understand your own account.

You keep control, and you stop being dependent.
Most firm owners never learn how their own Google Ads account works. Nobody explains it, and an agency has little reason to start. AdPilot is built the other way round. Every card tells you:
- What it changes - for example, pause a keyword that spent $412 and produced no calls.
- Why it helps - the reasoning, not just the instruction.
- What it is based on - the numbers in your own account.
Approve one and a snapshot is saved first. Then a before and after dashboard shows what happened to cost per case, return on ad spend, clicks and spend, in words that do not require a PPC course. After a month or two you are not only getting results. You know which levers produced them.
Flat, predictable pricing. It never grows with your ad spend.
Start with a free 7-day trial. No card. Pick a plan at the end, or walk away. Every plan is flat, so whether the firm spends $3,000 or $60,000 a month on ads, your AdPilot price is the same. We never take a percentage of your spend.
Full plan details on the pricing page.
AdPilot is new - and we’d rather earn your trust than fake it.
We could plaster this page with five-star quotes and a “trusted by 10,000 businesses” banner. We won’t - because AdPilot is new, and inventing proof would be lying to you. Instead, here’s what actually protects you:
- You risk nothing to try it. 7 days free, no credit card. If it isn’t useful, you walk away having spent nothing.
- Your account is never at risk. Nothing is ever applied without your one-tap approval, a snapshot is saved before every edit, every change has one-click revert, and a full audit log records it. The worst case is a suggestion you don’t like - so you just don’t approve it.
- Guardrails you can’t trip by accident. AdPilot never deletes campaigns and never touches shared budgets. Some doors simply don’t exist.
- Built by an operator, not a VC-funded black box. Software made to give small businesses the Google Ads work an agency charges a retainer for - without agency prices or the loss of control.
Judge us on the work, the math, and the safeguards - on your own numbers, not our adjectives.
Questions, answered straight
Are there restrictions on law firms advertising with Google?
For most practice areas, no. There are exceptions. Google restricts ads for bail bond services, applies extra rules to some legal lead generation and mass tort advertising, and does not allow certain claims about outcomes. Standard practice areas advertise normally. If a policy blocks something in your account, AdPilot explains it in plain language instead of leaving you with a disapproval code to decipher.
What counts as a conversion for a law firm?
Usually a phone call, sometimes a form or a booked consultation. It matters more here than in most industries. If only form fills are tracked, Google optimises toward the smaller half of your leads. AdPilot checks whether call tracking is in place before it starts recommending bid changes, because bid advice built on broken tracking is worse than no advice at all.
Can I run each practice area separately?
Yes, and you should. A DUI case and an estate plan carry different values and face different competition. AdPilot can build a campaign per practice area from scratch, structure, keywords and ads included. Each one arrives as a card you approve before anything goes live.
I only practise in one state. Will it waste money outside it?
Not if location targeting is set properly, and that is among the first things AdPilot checks. Loose geography is one of the most common leaks in legal accounts and also one of the easiest to close.
Do I need existing campaigns to start?
No. AdPilot can build the whole thing from nothing, keyword set and ads included. If you already run campaigns, it improves those instead. Your call.
Is bidding on another firm’s name allowed?
Using a competitor’s name as a keyword is permitted by Google. Using a trademarked name inside your ad text is not. It is common practice in legal, which is also the reason bidding on your own firm name is worth doing.
My marketing agency already handles this. Can I use both?
Yes. Since nothing is applied until you approve it, you can run AdPilot alongside your current setup and see what it catches. Some firms use it as a second opinion on the agency’s work before deciding anything.
How much should a law firm spend on Google Ads?
There is no honest universal figure, and anyone who offers you one is guessing. It depends on your practice areas, your geography and what a case is worth to you. What matters more at the start is that the money you already spend reaches people who actually have a case, which is what the negative keyword list above is for.
Will AdPilot change anything on its own?
No. Never. AdPilot proposes and you decide. Nothing is written to your account until you approve that specific change with one tap. If you approve nothing, nothing changes.
What if I don’t like a change I approved?
One-click revert. A snapshot is saved before every change, so it rolls straight back to how it was. The audit log shows exactly what happened, old value and new value.
Does the price go up as I spend more on ads?
No. Your plan price is flat no matter what you spend. Unlike an agency, AdPilot never takes a percentage of your budget.
